About

Professor of Communication, Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives, and Chief Technology Officer at Virginia Tech.

I am Professor of Communication, Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives, and Chief Technology Officer in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech. I lead the college’s Tech for Humanity (TfH) initiative and am affiliated with the Virginia Tech Centers for Human-Computer Interaction and Communicating Science.

My work sits at the intersection of content, technology, and human communication. I research how structured authoring, automation, and artificial intelligence are transforming the way organizations create, manage, and deliver information — including how algorithmic systems impose their own intention on content as they generate, rank, and mediate it.

I hold a Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric from the Department of English at Texas Tech University, a Master’s in Computer Systems from Universidad La Salle in Mexico City, and a B.A. in Communication from the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales de Mérida (ICSMAC) in Yucatán, Mexico.

See my academic information page for research interests, student committees, and links, or my books page for my published work, including The Uninvited Author: AI, Intent, and the Future of Content.
